NEWS and MEETINGS
2008

NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS NEWS

It is the beginning of November and I still cannot get used to the dark days. I think all plants people long for the light days of spring. I hope you will like our programme for 2008 and that you will all continue to come along and support the group.

AUTUMN and WINTER MEETINGS   are held at The Royal British Legion, Gotham, which lies on Nottingham Road, the main road through Gotham. They take the form of Auricula Feasts, usually with a talk and slide presentation followed at around 4pm by a light buffet meal. The meetings are relaxed and informal!

FOOD   No hog roasts as in the olden days and certainly no clay pipes but there will be an excellent light buffet as usual and it will cost £3.50 per head. Please pay on the day. Drinks are not included in the cost. Please remember to let me know if you are requiring food so that I can give Pam the numbers. You can post me the form, telephone or email me. Booking forms for the autumn meetings are sent out in the summer.

THANKS   Once again we extend our grateful thanks to the staff of The Royal British Legion in Gotham. They have made us feel very welcome. Thanks also to Pam Stoddart of Gotham for doing the catering for us. She is doing a grand job!

RAFFLE   Thanks to all who have donated much needed prizes at previous meetings. The proceeds of the raffle are vital to pay for the hall rental so please keep the prizes coming folks!

SECOND HAND BOOKS   Hazel and Chris Wood kindly started a second hand book sale at our meetings and it raises funds for the group. They and several other members have donated books. If you have any unwanted books, preferably on the subject of plants and gardening, please bring them along.

OPEN DAYS at FIELD HOUSE NURSERY   In 2008 there will be THREE Open Days at Field House Nursery. They are Sunday April 27th, 11am to 5pm, Saturday May 3rd, 11am to 5pm, and Sunday May 4th, 11am to 5pm. We are also hoping to hold a Primula and Auricula open day on Sunday June 22nd. All are welcome! We need volunteers to keep an eye on the tunnels and to answer questions from the general public. Please let Val know if you can spare an hour or so. Helpers get a free lunch!

SPECIALIST PLANT SALES   Val is organising four Specialist Plant Sales in 2008. They are at Chatsworth (April 20th and September 7th) and Renishaw Hall (May 11th and August 17th).

FINALLY   Thanks to all who attend our meetings and help to make them so enjoyable. Special thanks also to to members who have given talks to the group and who have travelled long distances to do so. I look forward to seeing you all next year!

MEETINGS for 2008

Saturday
January 19th
2.30pm
"WOODLAND GEMS"
by Andrew Ward
of Norwell Nurseries
At The Royal British Legion,
Gotham, Nottingham

Buffet meal £3.50 per head.
Pay on the day please.
Norwell Nurseries are a small nursery specialising in choice and unusual herbaceous perennials and alpines, the nursery is based around a one acre plantsman's garden which holds over 2,000 different species and is also open during nursery hours. (Also open for guided visits). Areas of particular interest include, woodland, hot beds (mid-summer reds, orange and yellow beds) daisy beds, (late summer-autumn colour) scree areas, bell flower beds around the patio with Penstemons, Campanulas and Dieramas colour theme beds and large herbaceous borders. A large pond with bog areas was created in 2007.

Some of the most outstanding plants which we can grow in our gardens are happy in shade. This talk illustrates the harbingers of spring with Erthroniums, Orchids, Meconopsis and sinister Arisaemas, and shows that even autumn need not be bereft of flower colour and plant interest in a shady garden. Andrew also shows us an easy way to make a peat bed to make these plants more accessible to all gardeners.

"WHERE FLOWERS KISS THE SKY -
AND LEECHES BITE YER BUM!!"

by Simon Croson
At The Royal British Legion,
Gotham, Nottingham

Buffet meal £3.50 per head.
Pay on the day please.
For those who do not know Simon, here are his own words on the subject.

"I joined the Auricula Society in the early 1990s and soon started amassing a large collection - 300 named varieties in total. Soon found out that the best way of getting some choice plants was at the shows and AGM. I began to show at Solihull and Knowle and picked up a few minor cards before having a few offsets of my own, Luke and Danielle, which took up a lot of time. Always a keen photographer my attention was drawn to recording any plants at home and in the natural setting. My photography gained more cards than the plants I showed. Being a member of the RAF I had the chance to travel and visit the Himalayas several times and during these trips I have recorded many primula species including Calderiana, Caveana, Denticulata, Klatii, Minutissima, Obliqua, Primulina, Reptans, Rotundifolia and Wollastonii. The photographs speak for themselves and the plants that grow in association are just as striking and interesting to anyone with am interest in Asiatic Alpine plants - Cremathodium, Saussurea, Delphinium, Anenome, Meconopsis, Coryadalis, Silene, Leontopodium, Androsace, and Gentians to name a few".

Simon has some fantastic photographs and anecdotes and this will be a great talk.

"TAKING STOCK"
by Allan Guest
At The Royal British Legion,
Gotham, Nottingham

Buffet meal £3.50 per head.
Pay on the day please.
In Allan's words "The talk will give us a chance to consider where the Auricula world is and where the growers present think we should take it. I would just like everyone to think about tradition, its value and weaknesses".

For those who don't know Allan, he is a grower of primulas and auriculas, a show judge, an excellent writer and an entertaining speaker. Allan reckons you will have already heard everything he has got to say but I am sure it will turn out Okay on the day!
